Meningitis B – Important Information for Patients (17th March 2026)

Posted on March 17th, 2026

We are aware of reports of an increase in cases of Meningitis B in Kent and understand this may be concerning for patients and families.

What is Meningitis B?

Meningitis B is a rare but serious bacterial infection that can cause inflammation of the lining of the brain (meningitis) and blood poisoning (septicaemia). It can affect people of any age but is most common in babies and young children.

Meningitis B Vaccination (NHS)

The MenB vaccine is part of the NHS childhood immunisation programme and is routinely offered to babies at:

  • 8 weeks

  • 12 weeks

  • 1 year (booster)

Children who missed these vaccines can usually catch up until their 2nd birthday.

The MenB vaccine is not routinely available on the NHS for older children or adults, unless they are in specific high-risk groups (for example, certain medical conditions affecting the immune system).

What if I’m concerned about my child’s vaccinations?

If you would like to check your child’s immunisation status, please contact the practice using Patient Triage.

Symptoms to be aware of

Meningitis and septicaemia can develop quickly. Seek urgent medical attention if you or your child develops:

  • High temperature (fever)

  • Severe headache

  • Vomiting

  • Sensitivity to light

  • Stiff neck

  • Drowsiness or difficulty waking

  • Cold hands and feet, limb pain, pale or mottled skin

  • A rash that does not fade when pressed

In babies, symptoms may also include:

  • Floppy or unresponsive behaviour

  • High-pitched crying

  • Refusing feeds

  • A bulging soft spot (fontanelle)

When to seek help

  • Call 999 or go to A&E if symptoms are severe or rapidly worsening

  • Contact NHS 111 for urgent advice if unsure
